Why Age in Days Is Trickier Than It Looks
Calculating age in years is simple. Calculating it in days, weeks, or months accurately requires accounting for leap years (which add an extra day every 4 years, with exceptions), variable month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days), and whether the current year is a leap year.
How to Calculate Age in Days
The most reliable method is to count the total number of days between your date of birth and today. This is done by:
- Converting both dates to a standard day number (Julian Day Number or similar)
- Subtracting the birth date number from today's number
Worked example: Born January 15, 1990. Date today: March 7, 2026. Total days = 13,200 days (approximately). That's over 13,000 days — most people are surprised by how large this number is.
Leap Year Effect
Every 4 years, an extra day is added to February. Over a 36-year lifespan, that adds roughly 9 extra days compared to a simple 365 × years calculation. The rule: a year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except for century years (like 1900), which must be divisible by 400 (2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not).
Age in Weeks and Months
Age in weeks = total days ÷ 7 (rounded down). Age in months is trickier because months vary in length. The correct approach counts full calendar months elapsed, not days ÷ 30.44.
| Age (Years) | Approx. Days | Approx. Weeks | Approx. Months |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 365–366 | 52–53 | 12 |
| 10 years | 3,652–3,653 | 521–522 | 120 |
| 18 years | 6,570–6,575 | 938–939 | 216 |
| 25 years | 9,131–9,132 | 1,304–1,305 | 300 |
| 30 years | 10,957–10,958 | 1,565–1,566 | 360 |
| 40 years | 14,609–14,611 | 2,087–2,088 | 480 |
| 50 years | 18,262–18,264 | 2,609–2,610 | 600 |
